Three Stooges, first published by Bluewater, US in 2011. I don’t really know since when the publishing rights were taken by Levity Comics. All I know, the last publisher was owned by the writer, Jaymes Reed.
Although I did whole interiors in this book, I didn’t paint the cover on first edition by Bluewater. I made one for the publisher. But they didn’t use it. The cover by me then used in Levity edition
This is my experiment style. Traditional painting using gouache. I love this kind of painting style. Maybe I’m gonna give a try on this technique again later.
Utrecht, March 31st 2018. Rob den Houter dropped us at the main gate of Jaarbeurs Utrecht, the place is where this spring edition of Heroes Dutch Comic Con being held.
Today is special. First, because this is my first time at this con. My head was thinking this is gonna be another great day at the con. Another reason is because this is the day when the first volume of my new series, Saul, launch to public as an album. Saul was written by Willem Ritstier. This guy has great reputation in his field. The series previously made it’s appearance at Stripglossy magazine in four chapters. I will also sit at Stripglossy booth during this event with some other guest artists from various countries. The last reason is, I am with my wife and my 19 months kid!
Like predicted, the crowd started to showed up like flood when the gate open at 8 a.m. I was sitting between Steve B. Scott an American comic artist and Brazilian comic artist, Eddy Barrows. These two are best known as comic artists of some series from DC or Marvel. We had miles queue lines of audience who want signing and sketches on their books. They were also bought some original artworks!
After several sketches, someone poked me in the back and saying,”Do you remember me?” Holy sh*t! that was Dick Matena! one of my hero! and I can’t believe he asked me that question. Of course I remember him. He dropped by to introduce his son who loved my works. See, I told ya, today is gonna be another great day at con! And yes it was. Too bad I couldn’t make it to meet my another hero Martin Lodewijk. He’s at Uitgeverij L (Eppo) booth for several hours. The crowd keep coming at my desk. I just took a break for sandwich and one cigarette. I don’t want to leave my audience for too long like what i did back those day at 2015 at Strip Festival Breda. I feel bad whenever I remember that. That was also a blast event anyway.
Second day was less people. But still crowded. I said less because I can leave the booth for some time to participate for a kind of quiz at the event. And I am also contributed drawing a comic strip that was drawn by various guest artists.
1st April 2018, the gate is closed. After last photo session with Willem the writer, I leave the con with a big smile. Even my small family enjoyed the show. My little kid was very cooperative during the whole event. He was just cried once because he bumped out his nose over my desk. Ice cream always works!
After listed in four chapters in four editions of Stripglossy Magazine, This tittle finally made it’s own album. De Levende Mantel (The Living Cloak) hits the comic stores under publisher Uitgeverij Personalia, Netherlands.
Spring time at Europe! Not a bad day to attending comic events at all. This year I am visiting Europe with my new family member, ARANKA! our boy, Golden boy. When I say “golden” because they say “Silence is Golden”. During the conventions, this 19 months old kid didn’t make any noise. No whining, No over crying, No shouting! that’s why I said “silence” lol. Serious version is, Aranka means Golden in Hungarian. And yes he was made at Budapest, Hungary :))
All right, enough talking proudly about my son. I want to tell you a little bit facts about F.A.C.T.S. that I know.
F.A.C.T.S stands to Fantasy Anime Comic Toys Space, is one of the biggest comic event in Belgium. They started in 1993 with only two tables and 40 visitors. Well it was more like a bunch of persons with same passions, gathered in a pub named Het Tonneke in Ghent, Belgium. In 1998 they started to move the venue to a bigger place. It was at I.C.C, Ghent. The F.A.C.T.S getting bigger and bigger. Now they are attended by around 30.000 visitors every years. So they need more room. In 2009 the event held in Flander Expo which covering 24.000 sq. m.
I feel so lucky to get invited to attend this ‘getting bigger’ event as VIP Guest!
I was sitting next to Brian Azzarello’s desk! This guy has kilometers queue line of people who asked for their books to be signed. And me? seems like I was sitting next to a wrong guy. He took my audiences! lol, just joking!
This event was crazy! full of crowd! Don’t even ask about cosplayers! There were tons of them! Toys geeks, a lot publishers, many celebrities! The last thing I mentioned I believe made this crowd keep coming from early morning in day-one when the gate was opened until the last second next day before they closed the gate.
In the last day, me and other guest artists including ; John Delaney, Romano Molenaar, Andrew Pepoy, and many more, were brought to Multatulie, a nice historical restaurant at riverside in Ghent for dinner.
Conclusion, I was very happy surrounded by these people. So was Kay my wife and our son, Aranka. I am looking forward to comeback to this event. Full excitement!
I wrote stories for my Indonesian comic books! Although it was hard at the beginning, it made some good reactions from the readers. I still learning to be better though.
But you know what? I never thinking that I will write story on my own for overseas country…..
But I did!
It was started while I dropped off a particular project with a publisher. My bad…
The basic story was set. The writer are fully confident that the story will fit well with my drawing style. Also verbally we got the deal with the publisher. But because some particular reasons, I just can’t do it at the moment. If there is anyone who can be blame. That was me. I just want to take some days off. Case closed.
But let’s see the bright side, I can finished my second book of Mahabharata that I did for local publisher. And the result is much better than the first book! And I can finished some postponed commissions for the fans!
Until one day the publisher offered me to contribute on his new magazine called Stripglossy. It is a comics magazine. and it’s brand new!
It was Seb van Der Kaaden the owner who contacted me by himself. Pheww!! lucky me. After I dropped off the project from him, he still gave me another chance!
I don’t have anything to contribute at the moment. But I took the liberty to accepted his offer. Even I didn’t have any story yet.
Since the offer was short story instead of full book, I think I can give a try to write it myself.
And yes it is gonna be marked as the first comic overseas that I will draw and write by myself. So that was how it happened…
Here is the peek of thumbnail of the project that will make appearances on Stripglossy Magazine Netherlands.
